Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha have reasons to smile. His ‘Rowdy Rathore’ is making its mark in the box office. It has collected Rs. 101.42 crores and has made it into the elite group of movies that have collected over Rs. 100 crores in the box office. Its overseas collections are $2,676,432 in nine days.
On the flip side of this coin, Dibakar Banerjee would be frowning at this moment. His movie ‘Shanghai’ is not faring as expected. Despite excellent reviews, it could rake in Rs. 3 crore on its first day and a total weekend collection of Rs. 12 crores. This is glum news as it was anticipated to get Rs. 20 crores being released in 1,200 screens.
A distributor from Kolkata claims that Shanghai has collected around Rs. 70 lakhs. This is a good number as far as Bengal is concerned. Yet he adds that figures released on Monday would be decisive as they would decide if the movie is beneficial for distributors.
‘Shanghai’ is running strong in the multiplexes while ‘Rowdy Rathore’ has a strong hold on the single screens. Also, the success of these two movies is intertwined and it appears that ‘Rowdy Rathore’ has an edge on ‘Shanghai’.
The reason would be that the first movie is entertaining to watch and is a light hearted action movie. Apart from its interestingly different screenplay, it has the usual plot of a cop taking on a local bad guy. This usual yet differently portrayed movie has made its mark while ‘Shanghai’ takes a beating.
